New Legislative Proposal on Fire Protection in EN Standards

Fire safety design can be influenced in several ways. The issue often lies in habits and mindset – designing based on the client's demand, which frequently leads to cost-effective fire protection that merely meets regulatory requirements. The sustainable aspect is therefore often excluded.

MLC has submitted a legislative proposal to the Swedish Parliament highlighting the need for reform in this area. The proposal addresses specific challenges in door environments, particularly regarding fire protection and security doors. It identifies knowledge gaps in both execution and equipment during the upgrading of fire or emergency doors.

Further emphasis is placed on the lack of fire and smoke tightness, even after upgrades. MLC stresses the importance of knowledge and proper execution, noting that this gap often becomes visible during renovation projects.

To address these issues, MLC proposes a dedicated training program for professionals installing security, fire, and emergency doors, as well as CE-marked doors requiring certification to meet building and safety standards.

In a social context, the proposal also raises questions of responsibility — whether it should lie with the contractor — and discusses the impact on social sustainability by ensuring safe working environments in areas with potential fire and explosion risks.

In summary, MLC presents a concrete proposal to Parliament to tackle the identified challenges within door environments and improve overall fire safety and building standards.

When fire strikes within a building – the only path to safety and freedom is the door.
